Hey beauties,
Today I want to do a “Face of the Day” post that was actually inspired by one of my favorite Youtube vloggers, Emma Pickles. She posted a very natural 40’s inspired look that was dainty and flirty, and then turned it up with a bit of glitter and liner. To see what I’m talking about go here.
So, I wanted to do a pinup inspired look with a tiny twist, but with a more dewy and natural looking base versus the usual full coverage matte face that many pinup inspired looks use.
Let’s be real, it’s Summer and it’s too hot for full coverage matte faces, unless you’re into the melting face look. Then rock on, boo.
For my base I primed with my Laura Mercier hydrating primer. It’s a holy grail of mine. For a little coverage I used the Elf foundation serum in “fair/light” mixed with a little bit of City Color Cosmetics tinted moisturizer in “fair.” This tinted moisturizer is very nice and was only $3! It actually matches my skin tone and gives a really nice dewy finish to the skin without covering up my freckles, which was what I wanted today.
I did spot conceal a bit with Nyx’s HD concealer in “porcelain” because I have a few red scars that I’m trying to treat with Mederma. My under eye concealer is also the Nyx concealer set with Ben Nye’s luxury powder in “Cameo.” To set my entire face I used my Laura Geller balance and brighten powder in “porcelain.”
Contour is Elf Cosmetics new Contour kit, which has also been a favorite of mine lately. Totally worth the $6. I will talk about it more after I edit and upload my Elf brand focus tutorial though.
Blush is actually Milani’s new (limited edition I believe) addition to their rose blush collection in “Awakening Rose.” This color is stunning and gives a very natural glow to my face, yet it does have a bit of shimmer in it. If you want to see my review of the rose blushes go here. Highlight is my tried and true Mary-Lou Manizer by The Balm. I like the highlighting shade from the elf contour kit, but I wanted something a bit more “bam.” Because I love highlighting since it’s the only thing I can get a bit heavy handed with without looking like I was baked and fried in a dorito salad.
My brows today are new as well! Okay, the product is new. Milani actually came out with their own brow pomade, and I needed it (obviously) and had to try it out immediately. I picked up the shade “dark brown” which is a bit warm for my skin and hair, so I did have to set everything with my Nyx brow gel in “Black.” I’m also trying to grow out and reshape my brows a bit, which is a frustrating process. Bare with these tacky brows for a bit.
I primed my eyes with my Nyx concealer and put a bit of the Ben Nye powder on the lids to prep and prime my lids. I used J.Cat Beauty’s shadow single in “Mud Wrestle” as my transtion shade, and I got this in my Lip Monthly bag this month. It’s a really nice cool toned taupe shade. It reminds me of “Vast” from the Kat Von D Innerstellar palette.
I ordered the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette off of Glambot last week. It was only $10 on clearance, so hell yeah. If you don’t know what Glambot is, I will link my video review of them right here.
Anyway, I ended up taking “Faint” in the crease to define it a bit more, and placed “W.O.S.” all over my lid and brow bone. I used “Venus” as my inner corner highlight and on the very top of my brow arch to lift my brows up a bit more.
Liner is Nyx’s Collection Noir black liquid liner, and I did a very thick wing and line with this. I then went over that line with the glitter half of Revlon’s glitter eye art duo in “Topaz Twinkle.” That’s the twist part to this look, by the way. I think the glitter gave this look a very subtle touch of glam.
Mascara used was Covergirl’s SuperSizer mascara and lashes are Kiss #11.
On the bottom lash line I used “Mud wrestle” and “faint” to even out the top half of my eyes, and then put Nyx’s Jumbo Pencil in “Milk” on my water line. I then set everything with my Pixi glow mist setting spray.
My lips are lined on the outside with Ofra Cosmetics “Orchid” liner and on the rest of my lips is Be a Bombshell Cosmetics lipstick in “Hollywood.” This color also came in my Lip Monthly bag this month. I adore this red shade! It’s so bright and pretty. It’s not super matte, but not super glossy. It’s the perfect comfortable semi-matte finish that still has a good lasting power to it.
That’s it for the entire look. I hope you all enjoyed it as much I enjoyed creating it! I felt inspired by Emma in several ways regarding this look. Even though the freckles she sports in her video are fake, mine are not. I used to cover up freckles constantly because I hated being so pale with freckles and a few moles. It’s taken me damaging my skin and a lot of self reflection to become more comfortable with the fact that I’m just a woman with Italian hair and Irish skin. Doesn’t mean that I don’t still love full coverage looks, it just means that I’m more comfortable venturing out with my natural skin peaking through during the warmer months.
I hope you’re all having wonderful days!

Such a pretty look! 🙂
I love this look! Do you remember where you got your vanity tray from, I love yours it’s so cute!
Love the modern take on a classic! I too, struggled with having freckles but it’s easier to just let them show!
How do you like the CG SuperSizer mascara?
Thank you so much!
Thank you! It’s actually a Sonia Kashuk tray from their latest collection (: I found it at Target!
It is easier for sure! I like the SuperSizer mascara. The wand kinda threw me off at first, but it does a great job at separating lashes, and works really well on the bottom lash line!
so pretty! come and check out my blog http://www.poshandspicy.wordpress.com xo Toby
I just love the contrast of your bight and doll-like face with black hair and a black T 🙂 Love the look! I’m going to have to hunt down Hollywood too, that’s a beautiful red for the season!
You always come up with the most beautiful makeup looks! I had no idea Milani had a new LE Rose blush out! I will hopefully be able to pick that one up soon! 🙂 xo
Such a gorgeous look – that lip colour is incredible on you Kayla!! 🙂 Karen xo
I’m going to invest in a Laura Mercier primer this weekend- the radiance one! Do you love your LM primer?
“Baked and fried in a Dorito salad.” xDDD Yes! I know that feeling too well…. <.<
I love that blush on your skin! ❤ The entire look is just *u*! ❤
Thank you so much, lovely!
Yes! I adore it. I always go back to my Laura Mercier primer no matter what. Definitely worth the investment, in my opinion.
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you so much! And yes, there’s 3 new blushes! I’m just sad they’re limited edition because all 3 are super lovely shades.
Thank you, lovely! I agree, and I will admit that in the tube the color didn’t excite me much. It’s one of those that you put on and say, “Woah, I look sexy.” Haha!
Will do 🙂 thanks for stopping by!
Always welcome hun 🙂 x
Awe well that Awakening Rose one sounds really nice!! I will have to check them out! 🙂
