City Color Cosmetics Be Matte Lipsticks: Review + Swatches

city color matte

Hey lovelies,

It’s Saturday, so you all know that I have some swatches! Today’s post isn’t going to be a new product review (though I have some awesome ones coming up!) but it is a product that I have been meaning to review and swatch. Typical disclaimer: this post is not sponsored, and I bought every product mentioned myself unless stated otherwise.

I’m going to be talking about these pretty City Color Cosmetics Be Matte lipsticks. If you’re unfamiliar with City Color, they are a cruelty free brand that sells their products mostly online, though they can be found in some beauty supply stores and Five Below stores. I’ve only started trying products by City Color over the past year or so, and I can’t get enough of them! I think their products are super affordable and high quality, and their tinted moisturizer has quickly become an everyday product for me.

These matte lipsticks can be found on their site at $4.99, but I found 3 out of the 4 I have at my local Five Below for $2 each! The fourth one I have thanks to Lip Monthly, which has been a great subscription in feeding into my lipstick obsession. There are 36 shades in all from this line, so I honestly feel there’s shades that everyone would love. I noticed they have pinks, nudes, a variety of reds, and some purples.

Formula wise, these are the definition of matte. These are not like the Milani Moisture matte lipsticks at all. They are more like the Melt Cosmetics formula, very dry, and they will drag a bit. However, do not let that description turn you away from these. Even though these are very matte, they do last a long time on the lips. You’ll just have to prep your lips a bit before applying these, more than likely.

Matte Lipstick Tricks: Even though I personally always put a heavy duty balm on before bed because I wear lipstick so frequently, there are ways to prep your lips as you put your makeup on in the morning, or whenever you do. Put some chapstick or a balm on before you apply anything else to your face. When you are about to put lipstick on, gently wipe the excess balm away. Lip liners and primers are also awesome when dealing with extremely matte formulas. Jordana, Essence, and Nyx all make incredibly affordable liners in about every shade imaginable to pair with lipsticks. Milani actually makes an anti-feathering lip liner that will prep your lips for matte lipstick as well.

Pigmentation: I find that these are very pigmented, and they do apply smoothly once you get them going. I do find they drag a bit at first, but it’s just something to keep in mind. I will say that if you don’t enjoy super matte formulas, that this line probably won’t be for you. Did I mention they’re matte? Matte. Matte matte matte.

From Left to Right:

Maroon: Red with a hint of pink to it.

Cammi:  A deep berry with a hint of purple

Marissa: A dark wine shade, Dupe That posted this shade next to Melt Cosmetics “Dark Room” and it was a spot on dupe, from shade to finish.

Cappucino: This shade does remind me of cappucino. It’s a very toffee type of nude.

Overall, I really like these and I do recommend looking into them if you’re not into liquid to matte lipsticks but still want a pigmented matte lipstick…or 10. Oh, and do make sure to check for coupon codes, there are hundreds of affiliate codes for 10-30% off on their website! I don’t have one, like I said, I’m not affiliated and I bought these myself 🙂

I hope you all enjoyed this post, or at least found it interesting. As always, thanks for reading, and I hope you’re all having lovely weekends!

  1. I love the shade Cammi😍I love berry colours for autumn! Please check out my blog, I post nail art tutorials and reviews etc xx☺️

  2. Great post! I first tried this brand when I used to be subscribed to Lip Monthly. Now I see them popping up a lot more and they just followed me on Instagram today lol. I definitely would like to check out more of their products. I have a lipstick of theirs, I can’t remember what one or what shade and I have the HD Powder that I got from Ipsy which is pretty nice too. I don’t buy only cruelty-free brands but I try to buy more of them than non cruelty-free at least. I try! lol. Your pictures and swatches look awesome! 🙂

  3. From what I have tried by them, I really like them! They must have went on a following spree because they followed me on instagram as well lol. I like that HD powder as well, but I sneezed one day while applying my powder and it got up my nose and kinda traumatized me haha. I don’t have all cruelty free brands either, but I also try to buy more cruelty free than not! And thank you pretty lady 🙂

  4. Awe well you’re very welcome! 🙂 Even though I like the HD Powder it’s a little messy. I can’t imagine accidentally getting it up your nose lol. I would be traumatized too! I hope you’re having a great weekend! ❤
