April Beauty Favorites

IMG_6574

Hey lovelies,

Another month, another favorites video. This month I had quite a few new products to talk about. For anyone curious, I did not include the Shaaanxo palette because I still want to play around with it a few more times before calling it a “favorite.” The Kat Von D quad made it because it’s one of the cutest palettes I’ve ordered in awhile, and the green in it really did knock my socks off. I have a look using it on my Instagram if anyone’s interested in seeing what I mean.

Random favorite of the month: anyone else catch my face in Shaaanxo’s April Favorites video at about 7:23? Someone on Facebook tagged me to let me know, and I was at my parents house and almost threw my phone across the room I was so excited. I’m dramatic, I know, but it really was an awesome moment for me considering Shannon is one of my favorite “big” beauty bloggers.

I also give a small pregnancy update in this video at the beginning for anyone that likes to keep up with my life outside of makeup. I hope you all enjoy it! I know it’s lengthy, and I’m going to work on cutting my favorites back down quite a bit. I don’t even realize I’m gushing about a product until I’m editing.

Also, don’t forget to follow me on Instagram if you want a chance to enter my 4k giveaway! Rules are on the post, and it ends Tuesday the 10th at 5 pm est. It’s not a huge giveaway, but I do want to show my appreciation for all the of the love and kindness I am continually shown by all of you.

Swatch Video: J.Cat Beauty Liptitude 24/7 Lip StainsWIld

jcat lipstick

Hey loves,

I uploaded a video to my Youtube channel last night! I think Friday may become my upload day? I dunno, still working on it. Anyway, I did a review + lip swatches of 5 out of 14 of the new J.Cat Beauty hydrating lip stains.

A few quick things:

These are highly pigmented.

They are semi matte.

The red ones do stain.

I love the heck out of this formula and the colors I swatched.

I bought all of these myself, except for the two that I got off Ipsy, but I also pay for that subscription every month.

The more I try from J.Cat Beauty, the more impressed I am. This formula is awesome, and until the August 1st you can get 25% off on these on their site.

Please watch my video and let me know what you think and if you like lip swatch videos!

Coming next week: Swatches of the Wet n Wild “High Flying Colors” palette

Face of the Day: My “go to” Date Night Look

IMG_8097

Hey lovelies,

How is everyone? I’m sitting down and typing this out on a Tuesday, and it’s been a weird day. A mostly happy day with some weird things. I started my day off by getting pooped on and I broke my favorite jewelry holder on my foot and I bled everywhere. However, once my kids laid down for a nap I was able to sit down and plan out my look for this week. I also had a great selfie day. There’s just something about looking through pictures and thinking, “Damn, I look nice,” that can perk a lady right up. And yes, you’re allowed to think you look damn good sometimes…or everyday. Because you all look nice everyday.

Anyway, today’s look is going to be my “go to” date night look lately. I tried to put my Kat Von D palette down for once and use all single shadows and some new products that I want to talk about a bit more. My go-to style of makeup in general is usually a pretty crease, a light lid, cat eye and fun lipstick. I know this differs for everyone, but I’m a bit “all or nothing” when it comes to my makeup. So, on date nights I like to go all out and feel happy and confident. For me, that includes red lipstick and cat eyes.

IMG_8095

I also put on an outfit that I would probably wear on a night out (a dress) and curled my hair. Without further adieu, let’s get into the details.

IMG_8096

My base today is actually a wee bit different than normal. I haven’t used my Hard Candy primer in awhile, so I pulled it out for this look. I actually like this primer, and do find it helps my makeup to truly stick, even in the Summer. My foundation is Nyx’s Invincible foundation in “Fair” mixed with a bit of my City Color tinted moisturizer in “fair” to thin it out a bit. That’s my number one tip for full coverage foundations on dry skin…a tinted moisturizer or a bit of beauty oil will thin out a matte foundation a bit making it lay better on the skin. I find this doesn’t take away too much coverage, but my skin has also been relatively clear lately.

My concealer is my usual…La Girl’s pro concealer in “porcelain.” However, today I set my under eyes with the City Color HD setting powder that I got in my July Ipsy bag. My first impression is that I enjoy this powder. Loose powder annoys me a bit in the sense that it’s pretty messy, but I did find this powder to be finely milled and very silky feeling.

IMG_8093

For my contour I used the dark shade in the Elf contour kit. Blush is “Birthday Suit” by Colourpop, and highlight is “Smokin Whistles” also by Colourpop.

My brows are my usual as of late, which is the Milani brow pomade in “Dark Brown” and set with Nyx’s brow mascara in “Black”

IMG_8099 IMG_8091

Okay, so for my eyes I primed with my Too Faced Shadow insurance. My transition shade is actually from a sample I received from Shiro Cosmetics called “Mourning.” It’s a lovely medium toned orangey-beige shade that is perfect for warmer toned looks because it’s not too orange. Don’t worry, I’ve ordered the full size. Then as a second transition shade I took “Dirty” by My Pretty Zombie Cosmetics (not pretty zombie cosmetics, it confused me at first too). Because I like to look like a big eyed doll at times, I did a rounded shape and took this pretty far in close to the bridge of my nose.

On my lid is actually a Colourpop shadow called “Acorn.” This came from their Spring collection, and I love it. It’s a pearlized cream color, so it gives dimension to this look without being shimmery. I applied this with my finger, which is how you get the most pigmentation with Colourpop shadows. However, concealer brushes work as well! The outer color is “A regular Bears Meeting” by Shiro Cosmetics.

Normally, I would use black liner for my wing. However, I’m still on the colored liner kick and I created a liner using Shiro Cosmetics’ “A War of Five Armies” shadow (see my method here) and I feel this really made the green in my eyes stand out. It’s a lovely dark burgundy shade. Lashes are the same ones that I talked about in my last video that you can watch here if interested. They’re just ebay lashes, but I love how wispy and romantic they look.

In my water liner I have Nyx’s jumbo eye pencil in “Milk.” Then I have “Mourning” blended out and “Dirty” closer to the lash line and slightly blended out. Mascara is Maybelline’s The Falsies. My inner corner highlight is super dramatic. You don’t have to be as dramatic as me. I used “Swan” from Colourpop. I love this as an inner corner highlight.

vampira

For my lips, it’s just Kat Von D’s “Vampira.” I haven’t worn this liquid lipstick in a bit, and I forgot how much I truly adore this shade and formula. It applies evenly and lasts all day. It feels comfortable and applies like a dream. I definitely want to get my hands on quite a few of the new shades when my local Sephora has all of them. I set my entire face with Urban Decays All Nighter spray.

Funny story about my hair: if you follow me on twitter, you would have seen me mention that I did a wet set using foam rollers and said I looked like “a punk poodle.” I did. It was bad. I put my hair in a bun and the next day (today) my hair looked better, and I went over the weird parts with a curling iron. This was the result. From punk poodle to glorious curls.

My necklace is from Bella Morta Jewelry, and my dress was actually a clearance find from Marshall’s.

I hope you all enjoyed this look! Tell me about your go to looks, for dates or whenever else. What makes you feel sexy and sassy?

Have a good day, lovelies.

Face of the Day: “Lingered in Twilight”

IMG_7964

Hey loves,

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for this week’s “face of the day” post! I look forward to this post every week, and I hope you all enjoy them as well. They’ve pushed me to try new looks and to try new products/colors out. When I did this look it was very rainy and gloomy, so I was feeling another cool toned look. But don’t worry, I made it fun! Anyone else stuck inside all day Tuesday thanks to intense storms? We were. My husky was feeling anxious and our power flickered on and off all day. I also had a tired mom moment and completely ignored the flash flood warning on my phone because I was very tired and the girls were still asleep.

Not one of my proudest moments.

Anyway, if my pictures seem a bit darker than usual, that’s why. I tend to use natural light for my face photos, it’s just personal preference.

IMG_7968

First thing to address, I cut my bangs! I wanted a new style without cutting my hair since I’ve been growing it out for two years now. So, I went with short “v” bangs. Essentially, they’re just bettie bangs that meet in a point. Like a faux widow’s peak. I love it. I also have new nose jewelry because I noticed last week that the gems in my last clicker were falling out. My nose looks pretty again.

IMG_7970

Okay, I’m serious now let’s talk makeup. For my base I primed with my Laura Mercier hydrating primer, as usual. I mixed together City Color Cosmetic’s tinted moisturizer in “fair” and LA Girl Pro BB cream in “fair.” There’s something that I really love about this combination. It’s a nice coverage and looks dewy on my skin, yet my freckles peak through. I’ve really been loving it, but I noticed that it’s a bit dark on me. I might have to add my manic panic dreamtone to it. Woo, it takes 3 products to get the perfect mix! #thestruggle

I set my face with my Laura Geller Balance and Brightening powder in “porcelain” and used my LA Girl pro concealer in “porcelain” under my eyes and set that with Physicians Formula correcting powder.

My contour today is my Lunatick Cosmetic Labs cool contour kit, and it’s also what I used to contour my nose. Blush is Milani’s “Romantic Rose” and highlight is Colourpop’s “Smokin Whistles.” I have been addicted to this highlight the past few weeks. It’s a gorgeous champagne color that reflects silver. It’s the absolute perfect champagne highlight for fair, cool toned skin. I’m in love.

IMG_7966

My brows are Milani’s new pomade in “dark” and set with Nyx’s brow mascara in “black.” Also a favorite combo of mine lately. I primed my eyes with Too Faced’s shadow insurance and my transition shade is “SOS” by Nyx. I then took “Downtown” by Colourpop on a flat brush and put that more concentrated in my crease. Because my liner is fun today, I wanted a simpler look on my lids, and I felt taupe would contrast well with the teal color of the liner. Lid and brow highlight is the white shade from the Kat Von D shade+light eye palette. Only because no other matte white compares to that one, in my opinion.

Okay, so remember when I posted about how to change your loose shadow into liner? Hey, well I did that today. I mixed a homemade water and vegetable glycerin combo on a palette with Shiro Cosmetics shadow in “Lingered in Twilight.” This shade is a gorgeous deeper teal with a bit of sparkle, and I thought it would make the perfect liner on a stormy day.

I did tightline my upper water line with a gel pencil because it made my eyes look a bit fuller, and I was planning on wearing false lashes. I used my Maybelline The Falsies mascara on my upper and lower lashes, and my lashes are a pair that I got off ebay. I honestly do not know the name of them, but they are very nice and wispy.

IMG_7965

On my lower lash line I used Nyx’s jumbo pencil in “Milk” on my water line and blended “SOS” and “Downtown” together on the lower lash line. My inner corner highlight is a Nyx loose pigment. I believe the color is “platinum” or something, but that’s a con to the Nyx loose shadows. They’re gorgeous and affordable, but good luck remembering the names once you take the sticker off and open it.

My lips are lined with Essence’s liner in “soft berry” and topped with LaSplash’s “Nymphadora.” My whole face is set with Pixi’s glow mist setting spray.

I hope you all enjoyed today’s face of the day post! If you have any requests or want to know anything about a product mentioned, please feel free to ask in the comment section!

Have a good day, beauties.

Hey, I’ve Posted 200 Times Now

IMG_4791

Hey everyone,

While I was brainstorming for ideas and replying to comments, I noticed that I have posted 200 posts on my blog! Well, once this post goes up it will be 200, but you know what I mean. That’s a lot of typing, and because I do reviews and stuff it’s been a lot of swatching and looking at lipstick stain tattoos grace my arms for almost a year now. It’s actually a joke with my family now, they’re always expecting to see some lipstick on my arms. They’re my “temporary tattoos.”

When I started this blog, I didn’t really have a purpose. I posted here and there and had no schedule. I was feeling down and very depressed. My anxiety was inhibiting me from leaving many days and I just felt like something had to give. When I brought up the idea of blogging mostly about makeup and beauty to my mom, she agreed that it might be good for me to have a creative outlet. It would give me something that is solely “mine” and would give me some consistency in the midst of the total chaos that is being a mom of two very small children.

To say that blogging has essentially saved my life in some ways is an understatement. I feel like I have a voice now. I have ever made friends, which if you read my post about my friendships (and lack thereof) the past few years, you will know that it’s a big deal for me. I absolutely love the blogging community as a whole. Sure, there are some negative areas, but most of the areas have brought nothing but positivity into my life. I consider each of you my friend.

Blogging isn’t just for my own self gain though. I truly adore and appreciate every single person that follows me and supports me. I can’t count the times I have caught myself smiling at a comment someone has left, and I have even been in tears at times. Good tears. The happy kind that reinforce that I do have a small place on the internet. A place to show the passion for makeup and pretty colors since I was a toddler. I have loved watching all of your blogs, if you have one, grow.

So, for my 200th post, I wanted to write out how grateful I am for every person reading this now. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. You have all helped me climb out of one of the darkest places I have been in. I’m sure that if my daughters could fully grasp what was going on with me a year ago and see the difference now, they would be thanking you all as well. I’m in a way better place now than I was a year ago. I still have a lot to work on, but I will continue to cope and try to be better for my kids sakes.

I love blogging. I’m still a very small blogger, but that’s okay with me. Numbers do not concern me. I told myself in the beginning that I will always prefer 200 people following me that read and engage with me than 2,000 that do not any day. I still mean that. Even if I stopped blogging tomorrow, I would still buy lipstick. I would still be reading your posts and ogling over your makeup collections. So, I might as well just continue to type it out.

Here’s to 200 posts, and to 200 more. I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. Thank you to every single person that follows me, likes my posts, retweets my tweets on twitter. You are all so special, and I just wanted to express that in a short post today.

You have all had a deep impact on my life, whether you know it or not.

Have a good day.

-Kayla

June Favorites

IMG_7756

Happy Saturday and Fourth of July! I posted my June Favorites video on my channel…last night.

I  know, it’s a few days late. I sat down three different times this past week to record it and I just wasn’t feeling right. I wasn’t happy with the lighting and my makeup. It was an off week for me in general, but I did finally feel well enough to sit down and record it again.

What were some of your favorites for the month? Link me to your blog posts and videos if you have them!

Now, I’m off to finally fulfill my craving for a burrito.

If you’re new here, please stick around for a bit if you want!

Have a good day, lovelies.

Face of the Day: Warm Eyes + Vampy Lip

IMG_7726

Hey beauties,

Today I have another Face of the Day post! I’m going to try to continue and post these every Thursday, and I also try to use new products mixed with some old favorites. Let me know if you’re all okay with seeing a makeup look every week!

IMG_7717

Today’s face was inspired by my want to slather one of the new shades from the Milani Moisture Matte lipstick line all over my face. I’m not even kidding. I also wanted to do something warm on the eyes, because I honestly love a very warm eye with a dark lip. The contrast is striking, in my opinion.

For my base, I went with Maybelline’s Master Illuminating primer and mixed one pump of Hard Candy’s “porcelain” glamoflauge with a little bit of Loreal’s Magi Lumi foundation (also the lightest shade)

Concealer is my usual NYX lavender and porcelain mixed, and I used it to highlight on the bridge of my nose as well. I set my face with Laura Geller’s balance and brightening powder in “porcelain.” My under eyes were set with physician’s formula correcting powder in “translucent.”

IMG_7741

Brows are Milani’s new brow pomade in “dark brown” set with Nyx’s brow mascara in “black”

I primed my eyes with concealer and used “succubus” from the Kat Von D Shade + Light eye palette to set the primer and help blend the colors out. Okay, I know I used a lot of different eye colors/palettes for this look so please bare with me. The first transition shade I used was from my Melt Cosmetics Dark Matter stack, the shade “unseen.” I’m obsessed with this shade. I then took “laetus” from the Shade+Light palette and lightly blended it with “unseen.”

IMG_7742

I took “sytry” on a flat brush and concentrated that in the crease. I I then took “Queensguard” by Shiro cosmetics on the entire lid, and made sure to clean up the crease a bit in the process. On a small angled brush I took “shax” and placed in concentrated on the outer part of the crease to further cut it a bit more. I took “blurr” from the Dark Matter stack and blended out any harsh lines on the outside shape and used “succubus” to highlight my brow bone.

Liner is physicians formula eye booster and Urban Decay’s 24/7 liner in “perversion.” I created the shape with the eye booster pen and filled it in with the liquid liner. I can’t stand the brush on the Urban Decay liner, but it truly is the blackest liquid liner in my collection.

Lower lash line is Stila Stay All Day smudger liner in “damsel” on my water line and all of that is smudged out with “Unseen” “sytry” and “laetus” in that order

Mascara on both upper and lower lash lines is Too Faced Better than Sex mascara. Lashes are Kiss 11.

Contour is Nyx’s HD blush in “taupe” and blush is Milani’s new rose blush in “Awakening Rose.”

Highlight is Nyx’s illuminator in “Ritualistic.” I recently pulled this highlighter back out and fell back in love with it! It’s a very pretty white gold shade that isn’t too overpowering on my fair skin. It’s also what’s on the inner corner of my eye and at the very top of my brow close to the arch.

IMG_7743

Lips are lined with Jordana’s liner in “cabernet” and topped with Milani’s Matte Fearless.

I set my entire face with Pixi’s glow mist setting spray.

Cute little flower band is actually from Rue 21, and they’re only $2 each so you need about 100.

If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to ask me! I hope you all enjoyed this look, and thanks for reading if you made it this far!

Have a lovely Thursday!

Tip: Turn Loose Shadow in a Liner

IMG_7261

Hey lovelies,

Today I want to share with you all something I’ve been obsessed with doing lately, and that’s turning my loose eyeshadows into eyeliners! Colorful and different liners are trending at the moment, but not everyone has money to drop on a plethora of different Anastasia waterproof creams and liners.

So, I’m going to show you how I create a few neat liners for very cheap. The price of the spray, brush, and BOTH shadows cost less than one high end cream liner.

Intrigued yet?

Okay, now that I hope have your attention, I’m going to prove just how simple this makeup trick really is.

There are mixing mediums that you can buy from Inglot and MAC that are “made” for this job, but I personally use a setting spray. I don’t like the City Color All Set Setting Spray on my face, so I’ve been using it for creating liners. It works well, in my opinion. I found this setting spray at my local Five Below for $3.

IMG_7262

I take my cute little mixing palette (it’s actually just a gold coaster from Target, nothing fancy) and spray a bit of setting spray on the palette. Then, I take a bit of loose shadow and gently scoop it on top of the setting spray.

Pictured here is Shiro Cosmetics loose shadow in “War of Five Armies” (if you get the reference, let’s be best friends). This size is a sample mini, which still has a good amount of product, and the cost was $3.50. The other color pictured above was “Lingered in Twilight.”

I will start small with the shadow and mix it up with my liner brush (Real Techniques $5.99) and keep gradually adding both setting spray and shadow until my desired pigmentation is achieved. That’s the cool thing about making your own liner, you can go soft or go intense.

Because these are shadows, they’re not going to be completely waterproof, but this is fun to do when you want a fun pop of color on your eyes.

IMG_7263

Personally, I don’t experience much fading/creasing when using these shadows as liners and using setting spray, but results may vary based on your eye shape and skin type.

My eyes are fairly large and my skin is dry. Meaning, everything sticks to me and I generally don’t experience smudging with liner on my upper lash line.

However, for the price to buy everything you would need, you can’t go wrong. And if doesn’t go well, you still have two gorgeous shadows instead of two cream liners sitting around and drying up in a drawer.

I love finding new ways to use makeup! What are some of your favorite alternative ways to your favorite products? Comment and tell me about it!

I hope you all enjoyed this quick tip or found it helpful in some way.

Have a good day, beauties.

Face of the Day: Elf Cosmetics

elf contour palette

Hey beauties,

Today I have another Face of the Day post, but there’s also a video tutorial on it! A little bit ago I posted a video about my top 10 favorite Elf products and I wanted to follow that up with a video using mostly Elf products. I used a few of my old favorites, and a few new favorites.

I even used and talked more about the new Elf contour palette!

elf contour palette

Isn’t it lovely? In short, I really like this palette so far and I think Elf did a great job with it!

For this tutorial, I did a very dark brown smokey eye…the kind of smokey eye my mom likes to refer to as “bedroom eyes.” Ha! I liked the way this turned out, and it would make my day if anyone that wants to watch it would and let me know what you think about it!

I know I’ve done a lot of bronzey and neutral looks lately, and I promise I will sit down soon and do something a little more colorful. Also, all of the products and brushes used are listed in the description under the video! If anyone has any questions or wants to know my thoughts on anything in particular, please feel free to ask! I promise that on Mondays I am too tired to bite.

I do hope you all enjoy this very affordable makeup look!

Have a great Monday!

Reviving Colourpop Shadows

IMG_7232

Hey beauties,

Today I have something a bit different for you all today, and that’s a tip on how to revive your Colourpop shadows, or any makeup to be honest!

I have mentioned Colourpop so many times on my blog before. I love their products. However, due to their weirdly enchanting creamy-powder texture they can dry out quicker than most other makeup products in your collection. I have had most of my Colourpop shadows for about 7-8 months and the only ones that have had any issues are the matte ones. It was a bit disheartening, I will admit.

Colourpop claims that the shelf life of their shadows is 1 year, which is something to consider if you plan on placing an order.

However, what if I told you that you can “revive” a shadow that’s a bit dried out? Are you intrigued yet?

I saw Shanon from ShanShortcakeBeauty mention putting Mac’s fix+ in her shadows to rehydrate them, but I don’t have fix+ and I wasn’t about to throw money down on a bottle of vegetable glycerin water just to hydrate my colourpop babies.

I ended up using the Mitchell and Peach face oil that I received from a prior Ipsy bag. I don’t like this on my face, but it has served it’s purpose well in giving life to my dry shadows.

All I did was take the round side of an eyeshadow brush and create little dips in the shadow. I then placed the TINIEST bit of oil in the shadow pan. Seriously, start off slow and then build it up because putting too much oil in at once can separate your shadow and make it a pain in the ass to squish back in.

Once you’re done squishing and hydrating the shadow, you just place the lid back on and let the oil work it’s magic through the product. I was able to use mine the next day.

This really worked, and I’m so happy it did!

“Bill” is one of my all time favorite shades by Colourpop, so seeing Bill dry and unhappy made me sad. Turns out Bill was just thirsty.

Now Bill is smooth and pigmented again and ready for action. Is Bill, or any of the shadows I did this to, as pretty as they once were?

Nope. They have seen better days. They can be used again though, and that’s all that matters to me at the moment. It’s not even that the shadows were unusable before re hydrating them, they just weren’t as pigmented and it was bugging the crap out of me.

This method can work on other makeup items, namely cream shadows. More specifically, Maybelline Color Tattoos. Is it just me, or do those dry out in less than a month? Annoying, and I hate the thought of wasting products even though I don’t really buy Maybelline anymore.

So, I put a little oil in them and let them sit, just like the colourpop shadows. Also worked like a charm, and now as I clean out my shadow collection I think, “Do I trash it or can I revive it?”

However, I will say that if you come across a cream/gel powder product that is very dry and has a weird smell…I would personally always trash it. I don’t always obey the “shelf life” rule, because I keep my makeup stored in a very cool and dark place, but I do make sure everything smells kosher.

I hope you all found this helpful…or entertaining. If you try this on anything, let me know how it worked out for you!

As always, thanks for reading and I hope you’re all having lovely days!
