Face of the day: out of my comfort zone

IMG_2104.JPG
I’m typically pretty comfortable in the neutral zone in terms of eye makeup. I was getting bored, so I wanted to switch things up a bit and try a pop of color.
I did go for a neutral look on my lids because I wanted to focus on the pop of color and my lips today. So, I used a standard matte white color and a matte brown blended in the crease. I then used my bh cosmetics Hollywood palette and blended the two blue shades on my lower lash line. I took the Nyx liquid eyeliner in extreme blue and created a winged eyeliner and put on ardell lashes in 117.
For my face I kept it simple. Foundation, concealer and wet n wild’s blush in pearlescent pink. I put a little highlight at the very tops of my cheeks just so my face wouldn’t look too matte.
On my lips is manic panic’s glamnation lipstick in nosferatu. I love this formula. It’s matte and easy to work with. The name of the lipstick itself seemed appropriate for October as well ❤
I'm pretty happy with how my journey out of the neutral box went.

Fall face: rainy day vamp

IMG_2070.JPG

It’s a very dark and stormy day here in my city. One of those chili days where it’s taking 2 cups of coffee just to wake up and all I want to do is cuddle with my babies and sleep. So, I decided to play with my makeup a bit to keep me busy. I tried something new and used colourpop cosmetics eyeshadow in “cheeky” as a transition color, and I love it! It’s a really peachy color that I feel would work for most people as a transition color. Other than that for my eyes I used the coastal scents revealed 2 palette, which is probably my second favorite palette to use. I used the wine and matte brown colors on the outside and a shimmery bronze on my lid.
I also tried out my coastal scents contouring brush I got in the mail. It’s way smaller than I expected, but it does work. It’s not great at blending the contour, but it’s great at laying it down and creating the line itself. I have Nyx simply vamp in “enamored” on my lips, and I’m in love with this color. I’m more of a matte lip kind of gal, but there’s just something about the rusted look with this lipstick that draws me in.
I’m off to enjoy a lazy rainy day with my girls. What are some of your favorite rainy day activities?

Face of the day: everyday retro

IMG_2056.JPG

Today I went with a simple pin up/retro look using a bb cream and red lipstick. I love all of the intense looks this season for fall, but a neutral eye and classic red lip will always be what I gravitate towards when I’m wanting to be comfortable. I realize a red lip isn’t an everyday look for many people, but for some reason it gives me a bit more energy to get things done during the day. As usual, I used my too faced natural eyes palette to create my eye look. Maybe one day I’ll leave my neutral eyeshadow comfort zone 😉

I went with a “fall glam” look today using a copper eyeshadow stick I got in a beauty box and a wine color blended into it from the revealed 2 palette. On my lips is Gerard cosmetics gloss in cocoa bean, and wanderlust blush by elf on my cheeks. Loving this look for fall ❤

Trend Thursday: Dark Nude Lips

I know that every beauty blogger has touched on the subject of the “Kylie Jenner” (I will admit I barely know who she is) look, but I am going to touch on it as well. When I saw the sudden boom of dark nude lipstick tutorials my first thought was actually, “That reminds me of the 90’s trend.” I was right. The celebrity’s look and the 90’s brownish-mauve lipstick looks are one in the same.

Even though I don’t know much about Kylie Jenner, I do know that I love dark nude shades for several reasons. 1) I think they are very flattering on many skin tones 2) it’s a nude look that someone as pale as me can get excited about. That’s right, if you are a pale princess that wasn’t able to get behind the flesh toned nude trend last year because it made you look dead (it did for me at least) you can get behind this trend!

So, in today’s post I want to show a few products and swatches of lipsticks that I think are right on trend, and include a few looks that I created with these products at the end of the post.

IMG_1947

First is Kat Von D’s studded lipstick in the shade “Lovecraft.” These lipsticks retail for $21 at Sephora, so this is definetely a high end choice. It is a lovely choice though. This lipstick is matte and even better, it smells like a vanilla cupcake! I am fairly obsessed with Kat Von D’s line as a whole, so her products are some of the only non drugstore items I will purchase. I mostly bought this shade for the name, I won’t even lie (Any other H.P. Lovecraft fans on here?). However, it’s quickly become one of my go to nudes for everyday looks. It’s not very dark, but it is a mauve matte shade. With that being said, matte formulas can be a bit drying so I would suggest always mosturizing and priming your lips before using a matte formula.

Gerard Cosmetics lipstick in the shade “1995.” This lipstick and brand has quickly gone from not mentioned often to booming in a very quick time span. This lipstick was created to give the 90’s look, as suggested by the name. Beauty Blogger Jaclyn Hill (one of my fave bloggers) actually collaborated with Gerard Cosmetics for this shade, and it is BEAUTIFUL. From the packaging to the color, it’s flawless. It’s not too matte, and it’s not creamy. I would still use a balm before putting this shade on, but it’s not as drying of a formula as the Kat Von D shade. These retail on their site for $19, but there are about a million Gerard Cosmetics coupon codes floating around. I used the code “emma” and received 20% off my order + free shipping.

Rimmell London Kat Moss lipstick in the shade “08.” I apologize in advance for the non cruelty free product, but this has been in my possession for awhile now and it’s the cheapest option I have to talk about. I do want to talk about at least one shade that can be found in drugstores that I already possess. This formula is not matte whatsoever, but it’s not shiny either. It’s more on the mauve side than it is on the nude. This shade is beautiful and would be an ideal everyday nude for very pale skin tones. These typically retail between $4-5 but Rimmel seems to be on sale often at Target and CVS.

Kat Von D’s liquid everlasting lipstick in the shade “Lolita.” Another Kat Von D product? Yes, I told you I am obsessed. I picked this up on impulse while getting some blush, and it’s probably the best impulse makeup purchase I have made in quite some time. This shade is everything I imagine when I think of dark nudes. It’s the perfect blend of mauve and dark brown. It’s matte. It’s long lasting. It’s perfect. I put this on the other day and ate 2 meals and drank lots of water and this stuff does not budge. Can we also talk about that packaging? Ugh, so gorgeous. These retail at $19 at Sephora, which is a bit cheaper than the Lime Crime Velvetines, which is what this formula reminds me of, except less messy. I can get a perfect application with the applicator it comes with, which is saying something for a liquid lipstick.

These are only 2 looks, but there are so many options when a neutral lip is being used. I’m more of a neutral kind of girl myself. I wear a lot of brown and black toned things, and it shows in my makeup and even in my closet. How are some ways that you have been wearing this new trend? Have you tried a dark nude lip?

When You Clean and Find Treasures

I can’t be the only one that procrastinates deep cleaning in drawers. Okay, I procrastinate on a lot of cleaning outside of my normal daily chore routine. When I do clean I sometimes find old things I had forgotten about or thought were lost, or things that I have yet to try out. I cleaned out a few drawers in my kitchen and room the other day and discovered a little bit of both! I was pretty excited, and I want to share some on this post.

IMG_1938

The first couple of things I stumbled on were my Sonia Kashuk body butter and a layering necklace (set of 3 separate necklaces) that I purchased from Target last winter. I think I purchased them last winter. This was a pretty neat rediscovery for me since the layering necklace look has been trending for a bit, and these 3 seemed so perfect together for me. That and I recall getting this set on clearance for $3-4. I am not typically into floral scented lotions, but this one is very nice to me. It’s not musky or has too much of a perfume scent, it’s just a light floral scent that smells wonderful on my skin. It also feels incredible on the skin and makes it soft, which is essential for me in the Fall and Winter. My skin is naturally dry.

IMG_1939

I ended up stumbling on even more things after that find! I have never used that paper mask, and I think I got it in an ipsy bag awhile back, but I’m not entirely sure. For some reason, paper masks intimidate me for whatever reason. Maybe it’s the fact that they’re supposed to just fit over your face? Also stumbled on a thing of Bath and Body Works lotion that was my favorite for a bit, but I misplaced it. It’s also possible my toddler placed it somewhere. Anyway, I bought this during a huge sale last summer and I’m happy I found it even though it might be a bit too much of a summer smell for me in the transition to fall. Yes, I’m that girl that even switches out lotions and perfumes to match the season. It is a very pretty scent though. It also has the the faintest floral scent mixed in with peaches, so it is neither too fruity nor too floral.

I purchased the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette last January and forgot that I had placed the deluxe samples of primer it came with in my kitchen “junk” drawer. I kind of figured they were just small samples, but I am really glad I stumbled on these again and took a closer look! The samples are pretty decently sized, and I have been using them for about 3 days now. Mostly the original formula, and it does indeed work. Not sure if I will purchase a full sized one of any of them (4 samples in all) since I am currently using my Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but maybe once I run out of that I will give the primer potions a spin.

Last thing I came across was a Nyx Matte lipstick in “Merlot.” I forgot how pretty and perfect this red shade is for fall. It’s a bit deeper than the “Perfect Red” from the same line, but not too dark to be considered vampy at all. I need to get to work on using up all of my Nyx lipsticks (which is a ton) so I am happy I came across this one now instead of later.

Has anyone else discovered some new or old goodies while cleaning lately? I would love to know! Finding things also makes me want to clean…almost.

Trendy Thursday: Purple

IMG_1856

Fall is a time of renewal for me, and also a time when I feel the most creative. So, I want to test out a new idea which is Trendy Thursday. A blog every Thursday dedicated to either a color or fashion trend, sometimes both. Please feel free to read this and let me know if you enjoy the post and this idea. Also, I need suggestions on what color or trend to do next.

Okay, I have been feeling this purple trend lately. The violet and lavender thing started in the spring and summer, and now that fall is rolling in I have seen more of the berry and vampy purples popping up in places and in new makeup lines. I love it! Purple used to be a color that intimidated me, but now that I have tried it out I like it. What I love about purple in general is that it is so flattering on all skin tones. I feel that everyone can pull purple clothing and lipstick off no problem.

On my lips is LA Girl’s glazed lip paint in “Seduce.” I love this color. I feel that it is the perfect berry shade for early fall. I have mentioned these lip paints in a prior post, and I still love them! The application can be a bit messy for the darker colors, but my Eco Tools lip brush helps me out with that. I paired this lipstick off with a matte neutral eye using my Too Faced Natural Eyes palette (review to come) and Red Cherry lashes in #605. Because I wanted more focus on my lips, I lightly contoured my cheeks with Nyx blush in Taupe and lightly dusted Nyx’s blush in Dusty Rose on my cheeks.

My purple cat cardigan is actually from Target, and it is from their fall 2014 line! I love this cardigan. I got it on sale for $14 a few weeks ago and it is form fitting and so so comfortable.

I also wanted to include in the post a few more swatches, including a swatch on the skin of the color I am wearing on my lips.

IMG_1851

Swatches going from bottom swatch to top (all of these are budget friendly):

Nyx soft matte lip cream in Transylvania- I absolutely adore this shade. It is a deep vampy matte purple, and it is so affordable. These lip creams also smell like vanilla cupcakes, so that’s a plus! I will say that the formula is a bit drying, so I typically put lip balm on beforehand and use a lip primer.

Nyx Devil’s Food Cake- I know, this is not really purple. It is a bit of a berry shade, and I wanted to include it because it will darken up lighter purple lipsticks if you’re wanting a glossy berry finish. I had bought so many of the butter glosses from Nyx before they sold out to Loreal. I really love them, and I am sad that I will not be repurchasing them after I use them all up. So, if you’re wondering why I am including Nyx in my posts again, that’s why. I’m currently trying to use up all of my lip products by them.

Nyx butter gloss in Raspberry Tart- if you’re wanting a kind of sheer purple to just test the waters, try this shade. Butter glosses go on very smooth in general, and though they are not long lasting, they do not feel sticky on the lips at all. They also have a very pleasant scent to them.

LA Girl’s glazed lip paint in Seduce- this was the color I am wearing in my photos this post. I love this color. The application is flawless as well as the color. I now have 8 of these lip paints and I plan on getting a few more. They are only about $4 each and now come in 18 different colors! Obsessed.

LA Girl’s glazed lip paint in Tempt- This is another berry color, but it’s super deep. I love this color. Due to the formula of the lip paints though, the application of this color can be messy and patchy. I’m not a huge fan of the applicators themselves of this product, so I typically put a little product on the back of my hand and apply it with a lip brush.

Just to add a bit of myself and my everyday life into the post, here’s a picture of me and both my daughters, Piper (3 months) and Harmony (2 years). This picture captures them both pretty well. Harmony is the light hearted goofy one and Piper seems to be the more serious child, though she’s still a very happy baby. We played outside for a bit today and enjoyed the nice weather. I can’t wait until the local corn mazes start to open up. What are some of your favorite family fall activities?
