Face of the Day: “Lingered in Twilight”

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for this week’s “face of the day” post! I look forward to this post every week, and I hope you all enjoy them as well. They’ve pushed me to try new looks and to try new products/colors out. When I did this look it was very rainy and gloomy, so I was feeling another cool toned look. But don’t worry, I made it fun! Anyone else stuck inside all day Tuesday thanks to intense storms? We were. My husky was feeling anxious and our power flickered on and off all day. I also had a tired mom moment and completely ignored the flash flood warning on my phone because I was very tired and the girls were still asleep.

Not one of my proudest moments.

Anyway, if my pictures seem a bit darker than usual, that’s why. I tend to use natural light for my face photos, it’s just personal preference.

First thing to address, I cut my bangs! I wanted a new style without cutting my hair since I’ve been growing it out for two years now. So, I went with short “v” bangs. Essentially, they’re just bettie bangs that meet in a point. Like a faux widow’s peak. I love it. I also have new nose jewelry because I noticed last week that the gems in my last clicker were falling out. My nose looks pretty again.

Okay, I’m serious now let’s talk makeup. For my base I primed with my Laura Mercier hydrating primer, as usual. I mixed together City Color Cosmetic’s tinted moisturizer in “fair” and LA Girl Pro BB cream in “fair.” There’s something that I really love about this combination. It’s a nice coverage and looks dewy on my skin, yet my freckles peak through. I’ve really been loving it, but I noticed that it’s a bit dark on me. I might have to add my manic panic dreamtone to it. Woo, it takes 3 products to get the perfect mix! #thestruggle

I set my face with my Laura Geller Balance and Brightening powder in “porcelain” and used my LA Girl pro concealer in “porcelain” under my eyes and set that with Physicians Formula correcting powder.

My contour today is my Lunatick Cosmetic Labs cool contour kit, and it’s also what I used to contour my nose. Blush is Milani’s “Romantic Rose” and highlight is Colourpop’s “Smokin Whistles.” I have been addicted to this highlight the past few weeks. It’s a gorgeous champagne color that reflects silver. It’s the absolute perfect champagne highlight for fair, cool toned skin. I’m in love.

My brows are Milani’s new pomade in “dark” and set with Nyx’s brow mascara in “black.” Also a favorite combo of mine lately. I primed my eyes with Too Faced’s shadow insurance and my transition shade is “SOS” by Nyx. I then took “Downtown” by Colourpop on a flat brush and put that more concentrated in my crease. Because my liner is fun today, I wanted a simpler look on my lids, and I felt taupe would contrast well with the teal color of the liner. Lid and brow highlight is the white shade from the Kat Von D shade+light eye palette. Only because no other matte white compares to that one, in my opinion.

Okay, so remember when I posted about how to change your loose shadow into liner? Hey, well I did that today. I mixed a homemade water and vegetable glycerin combo on a palette with Shiro Cosmetics shadow in “Lingered in Twilight.” This shade is a gorgeous deeper teal with a bit of sparkle, and I thought it would make the perfect liner on a stormy day.

I did tightline my upper water line with a gel pencil because it made my eyes look a bit fuller, and I was planning on wearing false lashes. I used my Maybelline The Falsies mascara on my upper and lower lashes, and my lashes are a pair that I got off ebay. I honestly do not know the name of them, but they are very nice and wispy.

On my lower lash line I used Nyx’s jumbo pencil in “Milk” on my water line and blended “SOS” and “Downtown” together on the lower lash line. My inner corner highlight is a Nyx loose pigment. I believe the color is “platinum” or something, but that’s a con to the Nyx loose shadows. They’re gorgeous and affordable, but good luck remembering the names once you take the sticker off and open it.

My lips are lined with Essence’s liner in “soft berry” and topped with LaSplash’s “Nymphadora.” My whole face is set with Pixi’s glow mist setting spray.

Ipsy Unbagging: May 2015

Hello, Jetsetters

I have an Ipsy unbagging for you all today, and yes, the theme is “Jetsetters” for the month. Remember when I said that last month’s bag was my all time favorite? I changed my mind, this is my new favorite bag. Seriously look at how freakin’ cute it is. There were several bags that were given out, and from what I’ve seen they’re all cute.

Anyway, if you’re new here a quick description of Ipsy is that it’s a beauty subscription that arrives at your doorstep once a month, and costs $10 per month. Each person takes a beauty quiz of sorts and is given 4-5 full sized or deluxe sample sized beauty items based on that quiz. There’s typically a pretty good mixture of high end and indie/non mainstream brands, especially lately it seems. I really feel that the Ipsy has stepped their game up and they are sending out some incredible things, or at least in my opinion they are.

The first thing I want to share from my bag is this BellaPierre gel liner. I wasn’t too thrilled about getting another liner, because I have about 10 that I need to use up from other beauty services…but then I swatched this one. I swatched it and it didn’t budge. I washed dishes, rubbed it with my hands…everything. It’s also very very creamy and smooth. I have a feeling that with allergy season upon us this liner may be my new best friend. Because there’s nothing better than being halfway through your day and having an intense sneeze fit and suddenly looking like a sad raccoon.

Okay, I will admit that I squealed a bit when I saw this in my glamroom. I’m a lip product junkie, I know it. I embrace it. Or rather, my lip products are always embracing my lips in some way (ha!). In my bag this month I got a mini pencil (still a good amount of product) of Urban Decay’s 24/7 lip priming pencil. This pencil from what I gathered is supposed to prime and blur out imperfections on the lips. I have a feeling this will come in handy now that I have an HD camera and every little line can now be seen on my lips. I also got two little lipgloss samples in “Failbait” and “Bittersweet.” I’m normally not a fan of samples like these because I never use them, but Urban Decay is one of my favorite brands so chances are these will be used. I’m honestly dying to try that purple gloss out sometime soon.

This was the other thing I was most excited about this month. I received a Luxie tapered blending eye brush, and I die over anything and everything rose gold. I actually ordered the Luxie angled face brush when they had a sale on it and I use that brush constantly for blush and it’s probably my prettiest brush I own. So, I was naturally excited to see I was going to be adding a new little rose gold pretty to my collection. Blending brushes are something I never seem to have enough of.

Last, but not least, I received a deluxe sample of the Briogeo leave in conditioning spray and a sample of the Amie morning-dew mattifying moisturizer. I use leave in conditioners CONSTANTLY on my hair since I have naturally coarse and frizzy hair, so the spray I’m pretty excited about. I typically don’t use hair samples (I forget to, oops) but that one I will use.

I’m happy about the moisturizer, just not too sure how it’s going to be on my skin yet. A “dew” mattifying moisturizer seems like a bit of an oxymoron to me, but I will try it at some point.

February Empties with Mini Reviews

My trash basket is overflowing with goodies to talk about this month. Wanna go through my beauty related trash that will include mini reviews? Keep reading!

Olay Daily Moisture Body Wash– This is a huge thing of body wash. It claims to have a whole thing of lotion per body wash container! I did enjoy this body wash. It has a very nice and fresh scent, and it’s common to find this brand on sale and very easy to find coupons. Other than it cleaned my butt, I don’t know what else to say about it.

Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Argan Oil– I found this while cleaning and realized I hadn’t used it up. I received this in an ipsy bag a decent amount of time ago. Don’t worry, I did the sniff test and it didn’t smell funky or anything so my hair didn’t crumble up and fall out or anything. I do like this oil and it made my hair shiny and soft. However, given the price tag on a full sized container I don’t think I will purchase it. I have drugstore items that make my hair feel just as soft and shiny.

Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile Soap– I bought a mini version of this to see how I would like it. I’ve always seen people using this soap to clean their brushes and sponges, so I figured I would give it a go. Oh my, this stuff will clean any kind of goop off your brushes without damaging them! I love it, and I’ve already bought a giant bottle of it! A little goes a long way, and it leaves my brushes feeling soft and they smell minty. New holy grail brush cleaner.

Lady Speed Stick Deodorant– Um, not too sure what I can really say about this, or why I decided to include it in this post. It smells nice and doesn’t leave weird white marks all over my clothes. And it’s cheap.

Aussie 3 min miracle deep conditioner this is a product that I always seem to repurchase and use. It’s very inexpensive and very effective, or at least for my hair it is. My hair is very thick and coarse and I like conditioners that weigh it down a bit without making it greasy. This conditioner does just that for me, and I use it 1-2 times a week. I go through them fairly quickly though because my hair is so long and thick, but at $3 a bottle I can’t go wrong with it.

Got2B Smooth Operator Leave in Conditioner I needed to use this stuff up so I could finally throw it away. I don’t hate it, but it’s wasn’t spectacular either. Is this even in stores anymore? Anyway, it did leave my ends feeling nice, but I have cheaper products now that do the same thing.

Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo Ah, another product I have about a million of because I got them for free once upon a time when I couponed. I do like the smell of this dry shampoo, but it left a weird feeling in my hair afterwards. I mostly used it up just to throw it away and start on my new bottles of rockaholic.

Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Face Mask I typically only keep masks and cream face washes in my collection for 6 months at most…I don’t like the idea of bacteria collecting on masks. It’s a weird/personal thing. However, I did use up most of this and it was technically almost empty. It’s a great mask! Very hydrating and soothing. It didn’t break me out or irritate my skin, which is a plus considering my skin is very snobby and sensitive.

Revlon Colorstay Lipstick Well, as you can tell this tube was pretty loved. I couldn’t find the name of the color anywhere on it…the sticker had fallen off. This color was pretty though despite how I recall not liking the stickiness of it after application. I needed to throw this out, and thought I would include it in this post…because why not?

Wet N Wild Lengthening Mascara I used this product up. It was super dry and needed to be retired and thrown into the makeup graveyard. This is a holy grail product for me, and it’s the only thing that works on my bottom lashes. It’s precise and doesn’t smudge and run everywhere. I’ve already repurchased another tube.

Purlisse Moisturizer I have like 3 more of these stored away because I get them in subscription boxes constantly. A full sized tube is about $55, so no I will probably never purchase a full sized one. However, I do like the way this feels on my face. It’s hydrating but light on the skin. I used it on days where my skin wasn’t as dry.

Loreal Youth Code Texture Perfecter Serum This is a newer holy grail product added to my skin routine. There’s still a bit of visible product left, but it won’t come out and I can’t get the bottle open. I use this serum mostly in the morning when I wake up, and it’s incredible! It leaves my skin feeling soft and ready for makeup. It’s also evened out the redness in my skin a lot. I’ve already repurchased. Many other serums like this one cost $50 or more, so this one is very affordable. However, if you have any other suggestion for serums that aren’t loreal…please let me know. I’m always down for cruelty free/vegan suggestions.

January Empties

I don’t think I have done an empties post in several months. I always forget to hold on to my trash.
I want to start doing them again, so if you want to go through my classy trash basket with me…keep reading.

I don’t have a super huge amount of trash this month since I have been trying out so many new things (my face is screaming at me to stop) but I do have several things to share.

1. Bed Head Rockaholic Dry Shampoo– This little puppy retails at $18, but I find that it’s on sale often at Ulta, and even on Zulily at times for $7.99 (like I would pay $18 ever). It’s my favorite dry shampoo that I have tried thus far. I know I posted about the Pssst dry shampoo, but I like the scent of the Bed Head one more. It has a nice orange scent and doesn’t leave white residue behind in my raven colored hair. I was afraid to finish it, but I just bought 2 more bottles of it at Ulta since the hair gods rained their blessings on me and I found 2 pink bottles of this dry shampoo for 97 cents each. Yep, you read that right. It was a great day.

2. Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips– I honestly go through these fairly often. I use pore strips on my nose probably once a week, and I typically use one on my chin once a week as well. I get really bad blackheads on my chin and nose, and these seem to help. I know some complain about the tugging and whatnot, but they have always worked for me. I feel like I have been using this brand of pore strips since I was in high school. My mom is to blame for my weird fascination with getting rid of blackheads.

3. Biore Self Heating One Minute Masks– I bought these awhile back out of pure curiosity. You’re supposed to rub this mask in circular motions on your face for 1 minute as it heats up and deep cleanses your pores. It heats up, alright. I honestly did not like the warmth in this mask. I felt like I was burning my face. However, it did leave my face feeling nice and clean. I finally used all of these up though. I will probably not repurchase these…ever. Sorry, Biore, I can’t take the heat.

4. Tarte “Lights, Camera, Lashes” Mascara– This mascara wasn’t as used up as it was dried out. Sadly, that happens to most mascaras it seems. I do like the formula of this mascara. It’s (well, before it dried out) a wet formula and actually gave my wimpy lashes nice length without it being clumpy. I may repurchase this one, I haven’t decided yet.

5. Elf Hydrating Under Eye Primer– this is a holy grail product for me. If I could have opened up this tube and scraped product out, I would have. It’s amazing! It’s hydrating and helps my concealer stay in place without creasing…it’s also $3. One of my absolute favorite beauty discoveries of 2014, and I always recommend this to anyone that looks like a Tim Burton character and wears a lot of concealer *raises hand.* I have already repurchased this, I can’t live without it.

6. Nyx HD concealers in “lavender” and “porcelain”– I go through these concealers very often. They’re my go-to concealers and this will probably not be the last time you see these in an empties post. I try out new concealers often, but I always reach for these. I’m so fair that I have to mix both to get a nice shade that conceals and brightens my under eye area, but at $5 each it’s okay. I will say that I feel these do not last very long, and that’s probably due to the packaging. I literally scrape product out of these and get every last drop out that I can. These two have just had enough, and are not on their journey to makeup heaven.

7. Olay fresh makeup remover wipes– I got these in my last Walmart beauty box. I love makeup wipes, so I was excited to try these out. Sadly, these disappointed me. They’re okay, but not the best I have ever tried. I felt like they didn’t remove a lot of makeup and I had to spend extra time washing my face afterwards. Definetely not something I will purchase on my own.

8. Neutrogena makeup remover wipes– these are my all time favorite remover wipes. I wish they weren’t on the pricier side ($6-8) but they’re worth it to me. They help me cut down on my skin care routine time, and when you have 2 kids that is actually a big deal. The sooner I can get my face cleaned off, the sooner I can sit down and read for a few minutes or whatever else. I will probably always go back to these and always repurchase them.

Welp, those were my empties for the month. Now I can throw them away and my boyfriend can stop giving my trash basket weird looks! 😀

Sally’s Clearance Sale

So, I walked into Sally’s to pick up my usual cholesterol deep conditioning treatment and walked out with all of this! However, it didn’t break the bank whatsoever. If you haven’t checked out your local Sally’s Beauty or been on their site, you should. Now. Okay, after you read this post, but they’re having a massive clearance sale and they have so much stuff that’s an additional 50% off. That’s right…a discount on a discount.

Hell yes.

I read somewhere that the Ion sun protecting sprays are being discontinued, so I picked up two. I have black hair, but black hair can also become sun damaged in the summer because it draws in so much light. I ended up getting all that’s pictured for $9 and some change and I got a cute little free makeup bag that had a tiny shampoo and conditioner set and a teasing comb. For those that don’t know, Ion is a 100% vegan and cruelty free hair brand. I also saw giant things of shampoo and conditioner for $4 by Ion. Seriously, those suckers would last for months.

I freakin’ love after holiday deals. Hot damn.

Now you can go run to your closest Sally’s.

First Impression: Hair Products

My first impression post this week is some hair products I have been testing out from an Ulta sale. I am not very into hair products per say, mostly because I have 2 kids and I have to pick between glorious hair and doing my makeup (makeup wins, obviously). However, I do like to take care of my hair since it’s very long and black.
Ulta had a sale a few weeks back where a hair product each day, and I waited until a specific day to get everything pictured. I waited for the day when the Healthy Sexy Hair leave-in conditioner was $7.99 because it’s normally $18, and I have actually tried that product once before. I loved it. It made my hair feel very soft and healthy after showering, and it made brushing it out way easier. I have very thick and naturally curly hair, so combing through it can be a nightmare at times. I will say that if you have thin or very straight hair this product may weigh your hair down a bit. It weighs mine down, but in a good way for my hair type. I want my hair to lay a bit flatter, especially if I plan on straightening it. The smell of this product is also phenomenal. I don’t know if I could ever bring myself to pay full price for this product, which is why I bought it on sale and got way too excited when I saw it was only $7.99 at Ulta.
The Psssst! products were also on sale at Ulta for BOGO free, so I decided to try the dry shampoo since I had seen a few other bloggers say it was amazing. I have to say, it’s a pretty decent dry shampoo. Very light scent, doesn’t leave a ridiculous amount of residue on my roots. I hate when dry shampoos leave a ton of residue behind, it makes my scalp feel weird and itchy. The point of dry shampoo is to refresh hair between washes, not weigh it down and make me feel gross. This dry shampoo doesn’t though. It retails at about $8 alone, and I do feel it is worth that. It works better than some of the cheaper brands I have tried, and better than a few higher end dry shampoos I have tried as well.
I went out on a limb and decided to try the clarify and shine scalp treatment even though I didn’t have high hopes. This product claims to “melt” product buildup out of your hair before showering to rejuvenate your scalp and give it shine. I do use a lot of dry shampoo and hair spray in my hair between washes, so I figured this might be worth a shot. This product definitely exceeded my expectations! I sprayed and massaged it into my scalp and let it sit for 3 mins before showering. My hair seriously felt so soft the next day and had a healthy shine to it. I would recommend this product to anyone that uses a lot of products in their hair. I guess our scalps just need a bit of treatment at times to get all of that product buildup out. I am so happy that this was not a flop like I expected, and I will for sure be re-buying this product in the future once I run out.
